Stop 8 · Gossip Walk
The pig-headed tree · Széchenyi tér · nickname means “Piggy Tree”
For thirty years a wild boar watched the walkers on Széchenyi tér. It was made of wood.
The plane tree was planted around 1890, when the square was landscaped. In the 1990s a growth appeared on one of its main branches that looked like a wild boar's head among the leaves. Locals named it: the pig-headed tree, the Piggy Tree, the Boar Tree.
In 2004 there were plans to cut it down, but residents protested and the tree stayed. It even got its own Wikipedia page. In 2023 it was measured at 27 metres tall and valued at 56 million forints.
It did not survive a fungal infection, though. In March 2025 it was felled; the boar's head was cut out and is being preserved. In February 2026 a new plane sapling was planted in its place.
