Erzsébet Park · Újszeged · 15 hectares

An imperial officer and his soldiers turned a wild forest into a park. Today it's Szeged's largest park, and it bears the name of an assassinated queen.

Why go: it's Szeged's largest park, about 15 hectares, right at the Újszeged end of the Belvárosi Bridge. You can walk, run, cycle and picnic under giant plane trees.

In 1858 Baron Vilmos Reitzenstein, an imperial officer and colonel of an Italian battalion, and his soldiers turned the wild forest into a baroque garden. Its main axis is still lined with giant plane trees.

Queen Elisabeth was assassinated in September 1898. The city then named the park after her, and the following spring three oak trees were planted in her memory, with a marble stone: “Queen Elisabeth's memorial trees”.

In 1899 the first national agricultural exhibition was held here, and from 1909 a tram ran out here. A children's playground was set aside in the park as early as the 1890s.

In summer the Újszeged Open-Air Stage plays here. In 2026 it got a new 1,159-seat auditorium in place of the old, uncomfortable wooden benches.

It's the training ground of runners, triathletes and handball players. In spring the May Day fair is here, and food festivals are held in it too.
