JATE Club

Dugonics tér 13. · basement club on two levels

In this basement an American hardcore band played to about two dozen people.

In the basement of the university's main building on Dugonics tér, music plays on two levels: hip-hop, techno, rock.

Local story: once Ignite played here to roughly two dozen people. Yet singer Zoli Téglás is the child of Hungarian parents, and their 2000 song “A Place Called Home” is a cover of the Hungarian folk song “A csitári hegyek alatt”. According to the story, tens of thousands were already singing it in Japan at the time.

Upstairs in the same building is the rector's office. In 2024 the FBI: International film crew turned it into an American embassy.

Former regulars of the SZOTE Club say the JATE was for the “satchel-carrying” students, while the Sing Sing drew the dressed-up crowd.

On 12 October 1973 Albert Szent-Györgyi talked with students here. Exactly 50 years later, in October 2023, newly minted Nobel laureate Katalin Karikó gave a talk in the recently reopened club.
