Széchenyi tér · Szeged's punks of the 1980s
The punks met in the milk bar on Széchenyi tér. The authorities got nervous at the mere word “punk”.
In the early 1980s a band formed and split in Szeged almost every five minutes. According to Ferenc Gallai, known as Boy, the punks got to know each other in the milk bar on Széchenyi tér.
Once they played the November 7 community centre under the name Nagyfröccs (“Big Spritzer”) so they wouldn't be banned. A “Punk Friday” planned for the cellar of the Tiszagyöngye was shut down by the police.
The toughest story is CPg's. Formed in Szeged in 1979, they played provocative gigs and songs critical of the regime. By 1982 Szeged venues had shut their doors to them, so they moved to Budapest. In 1983 they were convicted of “incitement”: three members got two years in prison.
Bonus: Boy's next band was called Zártosztály (“Locked Ward”). Pogány Induló's 2022 breakthrough hit has the same title.
