Sárga

Holiday colony and free beach · north of the centre, along the Tisza · nickname means “Yellow”

Nobody knows for sure why it's called Sárga (“Yellow”). Do you?

A holiday colony on the right bank of the Tisza, north of the city centre. Hundreds of families spend the summer here, and some live out here all year.

There was a beach here long ago: a 1970 water-management photo album already shows the cabins of the “Sárga” beach. Today Szeged's newest free beach is here too.

Nearby are fish restaurants and the Foka eco-harbour. Yes, Foka is a Szeged place name too, not a seal (fóka).

Urban legend

Several explanations go around for why it is called Sárga (“Yellow”): some say it is because of the yellowish sediment of the Maros, others say it comes from the color of the loess soil. Some even say the name Szeged itself is linked to this color.

What we know: The most obvious explanation is that one stretch of the old local fishing waters was called Sárga; the link with the name Szeged is only a guess.

Where it was said: Legenda a város szélén a Sárga (Szegedma)
