Free beach · Újszeged, at the foot of the city-centre bridge · nickname means “Flat”
Lapos (“Flat”) is not that flat. Even an official document says so.
At the Újszeged end of the Belvárosi Bridge is one of the city's favourite summer spots. It was only officially licensed as a bathing place in 2021, even though people have swum here for decades.
Despite its name, the official bathing-water profile says the riverbed drops off suddenly here. So you need to be able to swim.
The far bank was a beach long ago, too. One local recalled walking across the bridge as a child with her grandmother to the sandy bank with its changing cabins; grandma brought vegetable stew with sour cream in a basket, good even cold.
Film bonus: the crying scene of Szerelem első vérig (Love Till First Blood) was shot in the woods by the Lapos.
