Black House

Corner of Somogyi and Kelemen utca · 1857 · now a museum

It survived the 1879 flood, once housed a casino, and got its name from its old dark paint.

Built in 1857 to plans by Károly Gerster, in English Romantic style with a corner tower. It was originally a merchant's house and later a casino.

The name Black House comes from the facade's former dark, grey-black colour.

It survived the 1879 flood. A rarity in Szeged: all four corners of this junction have 19th-century houses that survived the flood, and all four are protected monuments.

Today it hosts the local-history exhibitions of the Móra Ferenc Museum.

Gossip

The Fekete Ház (“Black House”) got its name from its unusually dark plaster. Allegedly Mikszáth Kálmán said about the daughters of the house's owner at the time that even the clock stops when they walk into the room.

Where it was said: Fekete-ház (zárterkély)
